Diabetes, part 1: endogenous and endogenous management of glucose

I think the most basic point in understanding diabetes is in recognizing that blood glucose is managed from inside when a person has healthy metabolism---the liver, the brain and tissue insulin sensitivity use a feeback system to maintain blood glucose in a stable range.
When a person's metabolism is damaged, glucose (and fatty acids) are no longer stabilized in a healthy range by internal control mechanisms. A type 2 diabetic who is injecting insulin and ingesting carbohydrate is no longer relying on that internal system. He or she is trying to control blood glucose from the outside. Exogenous control, managing inputs from the outside to effect an inside variable, can never be as effective as endogenous controls, which rely on the instantaineous levels of variables and feedback loops to stabilize blood glucose.

I played golf with a guy who has type 2 diabetes. He had 2 episodes of low glucose during the round. Why? He had taken extra insulin to "cover" the dinner and lemon cake he had he night before. Yet, even though his pancreas still produces insulin, he does not know what his fasting insulin is. Insulin injections make his insulin resistance worse. How is he ever going to improve by going down that path?

Hormone replacement therapy is a rage now. In trying to become more "male" some of these guys will end up sterile and not able to do one of the most important things that males are supposed to do, which is to reproduce our species. Sports nutrition and excessive exercise and drinking, all "male" activities for the most part, contribute to a feminization of the male.

Plant proteins can contribute to type 1 diabetes through an immune response. Soy is the worst of these offending sources of protein and wheat is not far behind.
Intermittent Fasting is Superior to Calorie Restriction

Restricting calories is one method people use to slow aging and improve metabolism. This is a miserable way to live; eating 40% fewer calories for the rest of my life may make me wish not to extend it. Still, the modern way of eating and the diet we eat is accelerating the rate at which we age. In Evolutionary Fitness, we have a better way of staying young. Intermittently going hungry is part of it. Here is some recent research to show you that this is the superior way to stave off metabolic damage that 3 square meals a day along with energy bars and drinks and snacks ultimately cause.
You Won't Get Fat Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast will not make you fat. I skip breakfast often. I skip meals with no regret and happily eat more later or the next day. Breakfast skippers have more hectic lives and eat out more often. Breakfast is no more important than any other meal and no meal is really important. Breakfast does not magically consume more calories than it contains, though some seem to think of it that way. No one can defy the laws of thermodynamics.

Are you eating 3 meals a day and 3 snacks as so many diets recommend? Big mistake. Your body needs that time between meals to be as healthy as you could be.
